According to Charles Giblot Ducray, a local historian, the word ‘Curepipe’ literally means a pipe cleaner. He said that travelers and soldiers journeying from Port Louis and Grand Port usually stopped at this particular place to refill their pipes.

Today Curepipe is a leading commercial town with expanding shops and the organization of expo-fairs at the Forum. The largest stadium of the country, the George V stadium, as well as a dead volcano, the Trou Aux Cerfs, and a botanical garden are found in Curepipe.
