Grand Port is linked both to Dutch colonization and the initial phase of French colonization. In fact, the Dutch used Grand Port extensively as it offered better defence facilities. The Dutch named the part ‘Warwyjck Haven’ (Port South East). The French called it Port Bourbon (in honour of the Royal House of France) and Grand Port (the latter related to the large extent of the Port).Under French rule Grand Port district was subdivided into eight cantons.
The seat of the district council of the south (Grand Port / Savanne), the old French ruins, the Naval and historical museum and the SSR International Airport are found in the Grand Port district. |
