L'Ile Plate is the largest of the northern island, its surface area being 253 hectares. The primary vegetation has virtually disappeared due to fires and due to the invasion by exotic plants such as the Filao (Casuarina) tree, the wild bush Vieille Fille and Acacia trees.
In 1998, the island was rid of rats thanks to the conjugated efforts of scientists from New Zealand, technicians of the National Parks and Conservation Service and volunteers from the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation.

Regular checks are being carried out to ensure that the island is totally free of rats. Then endemic plants will be reintroduced on the island. Once endemic plants have established a firm foothold onto the island, endemic reptiles from Round Island will be released
