Mahebourg in the south has the layout of a french town with wide streets and drains. It has churches, a garden, a hospital, a museum, a district court, a Police station, a market, cinema houses and other infrastructures to meet thje need of its inhabitants. In 1865 the village had a population of 4000 people. Today Mahebourg harbours around 20,000 people.

Mahebourg knew rapid growth during the governorship of Decaen. At first the region had only a military post. The place was fortified with new ammunitions in order to face any foreign invasion.

At first it was know as Mahebourg, name given in memory of Mahe De Labourdonnais. In October 1806 the name was changed to Port Imperial in honour of Napoleon.

After the conquest of Mauritius by British, it was named Mahebourg. Monuments, Buildings and streets remind one of the famous naval battle of Ile de la Passe (1810), which is mentioned on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France. The Naval museum occupied by the French colony where the Captain Duperre the Commandant of the French navy and the Captain Willoughby Commandant of the British navy were injured during the Naval battle in 1810 in the bay of Grand Port and were both been hospitalized.Nowadays, Mahébourg is a bustling center of local trade. The new waterfront complex promises some memorable walks along the sea-side. It even has a casino, mark of a developing tourism industry.
