The development of Trou d’Eau Douce began during the Dutch occupation of the island. The entire population was then only made up of 32 inhabitants and all of Dutch origin. The Governor Smient had the ebony and Olive trees felled down and shipped to Holland. During that time, he discovered a well and today it is known as ‘Puits des Hollandais’.
There is an underground spring which emerges in the bay and the Dutch call it Verschehuyl or Fresh Water Hole. In the early French map it was caller Trou Frais. By the mid nineteenth century it was known as Trou d’Eau Douce. |
