The development of Trou d’Eau Douce began during the Dutch occupation of the island. The entire population was then only made up of 32 inhabitants and all of Dutch origin. The Governor Smient had the ebony and Olive trees felled down and shipped to Holland. During that time, he discovered a well and today it is known as ‘Puits des Hollandais’.

There is an underground spring which emerges in the bay and the Dutch call it Verschehuyl or Fresh Water Hole. In the early French map it was caller Trou Frais. By the mid nineteenth century it was known as Trou d’Eau Douce.

There are many islands near Trou d’Eau Douce: Ile Aux Cerfs, Ilot Margenir and Ile aux Levrettes to quote some of the most importants. Ile Aux Cerfs has been fully exploited to accomodate the needs of the tourists. No tourist can boast of having seen Mauritius without having seen seen or visited Ile Aux Cerfs where Princess Stephanie of Monace is a frequent visitor. In a recent interview she openly declared that she has fallen in love with the paradise-like islet.
