Around 53% of the Mauritian population is Hindus. Hindus in Mauritius, similarly to those in India, belong to separate linguistic groups coming from distinct region or states of India where they have fashioned by particular historical and cultural factors. Thus, there are hindi-speaking Hindus (natives of the sate of Bihar in Northern India), tamil-speaking (from Tamilnadu in the south of India), marathi-speaking (from Maharashtra, in the centre of western India), telegu-speaking (Andhra Pradesh), gujrati-speaking (from Gujerat) and sindhi-speaking Sanathans (state of Sind). They worship in about a hundred temples throughout the island and at “Ganga-Talao”, a high place of Hindu pilgrimage.
