Abbe de la Caille was a great mathematician and astronomer. It was he who made the first map of Mauritius. He had a passion for animals and was very devoted to his dog which he called Gris Gris. Soon after the death of the dog, he named a rocky beach near Souillac Gris Gris in its memery. However, the name Gris Gris does not appear on the map produced by de la Caille in 1753

History and tips about Mauritius.
According to another version, Gris Gris draws its name from the grey veil of sprays produced by the waves when they break on the rocks, near the shore. Other theories say that the word Gris Gris refers to spells and Black Magic and again that one of the rocks in the region looks an old enchantress.
